It's Important to Have Friends Who Have Seen You Fail, and Yet Still Believe In You

In college, I was the epitome of broke.  The youngest of seven kids, it’s a wonder that my single mother had ANYTHING to contribute to my college fund. Miraculously, minimal financial aid, terrible summer waitressing jobs, and generous contributions from my mom’s insignificant retirement fund aligned to somehow afford the tuition to Holy Cross. For college spending money, however, I lived week-to-week on money I made working various work-study gigs around campus.  For the most part, this worked-out pretty well; I’d make just enough money every week for beer, snacks and a few packs of gum.   When Spring...

I'm With Cindy Lou Who....Tips for Taking Back the Christmas Season

The other day, while my children were in the process of wolfing-down dinner in between multiple sports practices and school activities, my teenage son called me a Grinch. My kids were all talking about how excited they were for Christmas, and I subconsciously uttered an “Ugh,” under my breath.  My son, who can’t remember to pick up his dirty clothes off his bedroom floor, but somehow has a keen understanding of my human condition, picked-up on my negativity and immediately called-me- out.  It was a fleeting moment; within minutes the dirty dishes were piled in the sink, and we were...
